Jasmine was extremely excited to get to try the Discover with Dr. Cool gemstone dig kit. She has never tried anything like it. I explained to her that this was how scientists find dinosaur bones, she thought that was awesome.

First thing I did was check out the box, which I thought was really cool.  It's a sort of  "book box" you are able to open the box and explore what is inside before actually opening it. I like this because I was able to show Jasmine what we would be doing without actually opening the box all the way.

I like this because when you open the cover of the box there are instructions. Whether you're planning to use this at home or in your class with children, the box design gives you the ability to explain the instructions without distractions.

The instruction read as followed:

  • Place your digging brick down on newspaper (trust me do not skip the newspaper, I'll explain why later)
  • Use the digging tools to find the real gemstones!
  • Rinse the specimens in water.
  • Examine with your magnifying glass.
  • Learn about your specimens from the adventure guide.
  • Enjoy the 10 fun puzzles in your activity book.

Included in this kit:

  • Digging Block
  • Excavation Tools (chisel, brush and magnifying glass)
  • Adventure Guide
  • Activity Booklet
  • 3 Real Specimens
There was also a flyer showing all the cool kits you can get from Discover with Dr. Cool, They all look amazing and fun.

"Discover with Dr. Cool's Mission:
To inspire the next generation of scientists with cool science kits that contain real specimens--not plastic replicas."

I have to admit this kit is awesome. It does really have 3 real gems inside of it and Jasmine had so much fun digging them out by herself. We did follow the instructions and so first thing we did was to lay out the newspaper.

Then place the "digging block" on top of the newspaper. The digging block itself is extremely pretty.

Let the digging begin.

I really think not only this a really cool experiment to do with our kids and students. It also teaches fine motor skills as well. When Jasmine began to dig she said "Ma' I'm not sure how to dig for it using this tool" I told her there was no right or wrong way to do it, that you should just take your time and get the specimens out carefully. :) She at this point is in the complete "I'm an awesome Scientist" mode. before long, she understands how hard she needs to press and when she needs to wipe away the dust with her brush tool to look for the gems.

She spotted her first one and she was so excited she could barely speak. I swear I heard her say "look it" about 50 times lol.  At first neither of us were sure if it was really the gem or not, it sort of blended in with the digging block. She just kept right on digging really careful and she spotted one you could really tell it was a gem. She moved on to work on that area carefully using her tools until eventually she got it out. As you can see it does create a lot of dust while they are digging, be sure to try hard to keep it on the newspaper.

Here she is when she got her first gemstone out which was a tigers eye.

Overall we had a really enjoyable experience with the Discover with Dr. Cool Gemstone Dig Kit. It took her about 2 hours by herself, but she enjoyed every minute of it.

Not only was Jasmine having fun the entire time but she was also learning about science, the history of gemstones. The fun does not stop with just digging out the gemstones. There is a fun activity booklet and also you are able to keep the real gemstones as memorabilia of your experience. This is an awesome kit to teach at home or in school. I would definitely recommend any of the Discover with Dr. Cool kits to anyone involved in teaching children science.

I hope you found this review to be helpful
